4-H was awesome!
I loved being a part of a group that didn't judge you by the clothes you wore or the house you lived in or how much your mom could do to make your projects and presentations the best... it was about being yourself and proud of what "you" could create!
I learned so many cooking skills, I created fabulous crafts, I became a great public speaker thanks to the presentations we did at the fair each summer, and I became a reporter.
I was the club secretary and the minutes from our meetings were published in our town’s local paper every Thursday. It was such a great responsibility, and I took it very seriously.
I remember scanning the “Club News” section of the Madras Pioneer each week to see my name in print... under the title The Yummy Bunch… what a name huh?!
I’m laughing just thinking about the days at Kelly’s house preparing coffee cake (that I still make today), learning all about table settings & napkin folds, and learning the proper way to use a glue gun when making projects.
Well, the reason I’ve taken this trip down memory lane is because my mom did a birthday dinner for my dad the other night and got out my old “napkin folding” book. Inside she found this (hopefully you can read my writing):
This was a part of my presentation at the fair one year... gotta love it!
My mom said she probably could have corrected my grammer, but decided not to.
Thanks mom - I think I learned more from you not fixing it!
Anyway... if any of you ever want to borrow the book... I know you'll have a beautiful table setting!

Oh Linds!!! How fun... I loved 4H as well... it REALLY did define who I was as a kid. The system is great at building self-confidence in kids. I don't know who I would be without that experience... we should share stories sometime. :-)
I remember well your Napkin Folding presentation....AND your presentation on "How to make an Egg Salad Sandwich"....oh, yes, those were the days!
Your interest, at the time, was more on having fun with your friends, rather than having fun with animals! Kirsten was the one who wanted to have a 4H sheep, but we didn't think a sheep "in town" would go over well with the neighbors.
Glad you can look back with such fond memories....and that you can appreciate the value of writing your "own" speech - even with the grammatical errors. :-)
How fun! I love when I find things at my mom's that take me back! Thanks for sharin' your trip with us!
Love your post today! Takes me back to my days in Camp Fire! It's just so great to have awesome memories and even skills that we can still use years later!
Love,
Katie
OK, so I am laughing right now. I too can remember your egg salad presentation...don't really remember the napkin folding, but remember many the dinner at Grandma S. house that we were in charge of the napkin folding. Maybe I should have been in 4-H to aid in my public speaking??
I just signed Arielle and I up for the cooking in 4H. She and I are so excited!! I was never able to do 4H so this is all new. Mel
