- my camera broke
- my great friends - the Lukes - let me borrow their great camera for a few days, advised me on camera purchases I might want to consider, and blessed me yet once again.
- my incredible friend from college - Andrea - & her incredible family drove 6+ hours to bring me a camera to borrow for as long as I need it. There are no words to describe the amazing amount of appreciation I have for her & her family.
- my tomatoes, zucchini, peppers and onions went CRAZY ... and I made batch after batch after batch of salsa.
- calves came home.
- hunters came for the weekend.
- Mack greeted the hunters on Saturday morning with boots and his {shooting gun} ... but wearing nothing else.
- I tried some new recipies.
- I haven't taken very many pictures this month compared to Octobers in the past.
- I got my first cold of this school year.
- Mack is closer and closer to being totally potty-trained.
- I grew a lot professionally.
- I grew a lot spiritually.
- I grew a bit around the waist too.
- I didn't read one book for pleasure.
- I made a menu ... and then didn't follow it.
- I got a kink in my neck ... and it's still there.
- I made cookies and froze bags and bags of them ... like a squirrel gathering nuts.
- I made 13 jars of applesauce.
- I went to Mason's first awards assembly and parent-teacher conference -all in the same day.
- Mason lost his first tooth.
- I saw, once again, how important animals are to my husband.
- I got a ticket for talking on my cell phone.
- I cried more than usual.
- I saw fewer friends & more of my husband and boys.
- I hosted a GREAT pumpkin party.
- Franklin is one of my favorite story characters.
- I love pumpkins, but don't really care for Halloween.
- I walked a lot.
- I'm not a coffee drinker, but Pumpkin Spice lattes are really good.
- Spiced apple cider is still my favorite.
- Learning new things and trying those new things you just learned are two different things.
- I made new friends ... and reconnected with ones from the past.
- I prayed.
- I loved.
- I believed.
- I hoped.
- I lived.

Rewinding ...
Things I need & want to remember about October:

birthday fun.
a Sunday afternoon spent having a ton of fun ...
and eating a TON of candy!
Thanks Estes girls for being a part of our lives ... we're blessed because of it!
and our dentist may be a whole lot richer too.
October 21, 2010
the {tooth fairy}
Mason pulled his tooth out ... finally.
All by himself.
The tooth fairy came and put 4 quarters in the special pocket pillow.
and then ...
another tooth fairy came and brought a puppy with him.
Mason isn't convinced that the tooth fairy could bring a puppy, but he's one happy boy ... and $1 richer.
Meet Rusty Mae!
another girl in the family ... and a cute one at that!

all tied up.
I just walked out of my classroom.
My hands and arms are filled.
A basket, two teaching manuals, an external hard drive, my coat, a bag, and my purse are weighing me down.
I left my camera bag behind.
My eyes are watering.
My nose has been dripping all day long.
My head is down.
I don’t want to look up.
I know I should, but I don’t want to.
I’m tired.
It’s 3:45.
I’m supposed to be driving to Echo right now.
I’m late.
I don’t stop at my car.
I keep walking across the parking lot.
And I make my way right into the office of the assistant superintendent of my school district.
She’s one of my bosses, she’s my sister-in-law, but most importantly she’s my friend.
I sit down, dropping my armload of things to the ground.
I’m tired.
And I need to cry.
So I sit there.
My face buried in my hands, and I cry.
And you know what … sometimes, the best thing a person can do is {untie} their worries and fears.
I’ve been all tied up.
{knotted} to be exact.
Frustrated with my time management skills – or lack thereof.
Exhausted with the work, home, ranch schedule this season of my life has brought.
Overwhelmed with the great resources I have as a teacher – not knowing where to really start.
Knot after knot after knot.
Oh, I could tell you that I have it all together.
I could show you pictures of a perfectly organized desk, a balanced check book, and a clean car.
I could write words that would lead you to believe that my life is totally and completely under control and that the teacher who’s picture was on the front page of last Sunday’s paper is worthy of such fame.
But I can’t.
Honesty & sincerity are what I’m striving for here.
So …
I think I’d like to be seen as a shoelace or maybe even a piece of baling twine.
A shoelace that is tied in a neat bow, but free of knots.
A piece of twine with color and sparkle.
A shoelace that’s not unraveled or shredding at the tip.
A piece of twine that’s not tripping anything or anyone up.
Because, if it’s free of knots, it’s doing its job.
It’s making the world around it fit just right.
It’s holding things together.
It’s serving a unique and special purpose.
And even when it does come untied, it rests easy … knowing that with a little encouragement and some caring fingers and hands, it will be holding everything together again very soon.

do you know ...
how much I enjoy being your mom?
how hard it is to be mad when you're being silly?
how fun it is to watch you play?
how exhausting {brothers} can be on a tired mama?
how wonderful it is to watch you grow?
how rough it is to see you unhappy or sad?
how important I feel to be called your mom?
and even when you're running away from me & my camera ...
do you know how much I absolutely love you?!
I hope and pray you do.

learning.
Learning is what this boy is {loving} right now ...
Learning to read.
Learning to write.
Singing songs.
Learning to spell.
Leaving notes all over the house.
Dreaming.
..................................
I hope he stays this way for a long, long time.
well ... I guess that would be {forever}.

... from whom all blessing flow.
I grew up singing this song.
Sometimes it was a whisper.
Sometimes it was from the depths of my soul.
Sometimes I couldn't choke the words out because of the lump in throat.
but every time I sang it, I truly believed the words.
..............................
Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.
.....................................
I know I've been a bit "behind" with my multitude of much ... but there are simply too many blessings to disregard the goodness that abounds our life right now ... so I continue with the {multitudes of much} ... on a Tuesday {wink}

these little piggies.
There's just something about these little piggies that make everything {right} in the world.
Especially on days when there seems to be more {wrong} than {right}.
..................................
Today ... I'm praising God for the {little things}.
she's {home}.
I'm not sure where to start ... but everything starts somewhere ... so here goes.
It's Monday afternoon.
I arrived at school this morning just after 6:30. Way too early. I got my classroom ready for the week as best I could, worked on plans & preparations for my reading group, and then just sat here. I had much more to do, but I couldn't get up.
I just sat.
Our school was about to help 500+ children & staff grieve the loss of an amazing, strong, beautiful 4th grade student.
Our school was about open the doors and put our best foot forward while struggling to maintain composure.
Our school was about to face an aspect of life that many don't fully understand.
And I sat.
Why couldn't I come up with something to write?
Why couldn't I just keep myself {busy}? ... with the pile of work that never seems to disappear.
Why couldn't I think of anything but heaven?
.................................................
Heaven ...
That place we know was created for us ... but yet, it's that place that many of us fear.
That place we know to love, but yet at the same time, that place we don't fully understand.
I'm re-reading Randy Alcorn's book : In Light of Eternity and I'm praying it answers the questions I'm facing & at the same time, solidifies my belief in this statement:
Home is a place where you fit right in. It's the place you were made for. Most houses we live in on earth weren't really made just for us. But heaven is.
Riley is at home.
Riley is experiencing no more pain.
Riley is dancing with Jesus.
... and I'm praising God that He created a {home} like no other.
A place we are meant to anticipate with great joy.
... because knowing that Riley is finally {home} just seems to make the loss of her here on Earth a little more bearable.
I don't understand why she lost this fight with cancer ... but I do know I will see her again ... at {home}... in heaven.

wisdom from Max.
from Max Lucado:
How do you simplify faith?
Simplify your faith by seeking God for yourself.
No confusing ceremonies necessary.
No mysterious rituals required.
No elaborate channels of command or levels of access.
You have a Bible? You can study.
You have a heart? You can pray.
You have a mind? You can think.

RIP
My camera died.
gone.
won't turn on.
nothing.
nada.
.................................
I'm now saving pop cans, and collecting donations. {just kidding ... sort of}
RIP sweet camera of mine!

little known {facts} ... and a bit of an opinion.
Grasshoppers are attracted to cow crap.
Mack loves to laugh with Mimzy and Papa George.
Mack loves his {night-night}.
Mack is Mack ... and he is loved.
Mason has a loose tooth.
Mason needs a haircut.
Mason & mom are not a good homework team ... but we're trying.
Mason & mom are a lot alike ... not always in the best ways.
I work with some of the {best} people on the planet.
And we're always up for {fun}!!
Our garden was {amazing} this year.
Small, but full of {life}.
and in my opinion ...
it's dark way too early right now.
it stays dark way too long right now.
purple is a great color.
orange is too.
leggings = comfort and warmth.
first graders say the darnedest things.
listening isn't as easy as talking.
living on a ranch is something I've definitely grown to love.
home-made applesauce is well worth the effort.
salsa from your own garden ... easy and delicious.
I'm in a place in my life where {busy} defines me ... but it's a place that I know I'm supposed to be.
and ...
everyone needs to read Psalm 127 and find {rest} in and among the {busy}lives we all lead.
thanks for the reminder dad.
Psalm 127: 1-2
If God doesn't build the house, the builders only build shacks.
If God doesn't guard the city,
the night watchman might as well nap.
It's useless to rise early and go to bed late,
and work your worried fingers to the bone.
Don't you know he enjoys
giving rest to those he loves?
Rest easy friends.
Rest easy.

Roll with it.
I'll be the first to admit ... I'm not always good at {rolling with it.}
Oh, I claim to be that person.
Willing to adjust to unforeseen circumstances.
Open to change.
Quick to say yes.
But honestly ... I like to see the big picture before I say actually {commit} to something.
................................................
I want to know if it's really going to work.
I question the consequences before acting.
I think things through.
...............................................
But ... last night as I was re-reading a chapter from Max Lucado's Fearless, I saw {rolling with it} in a whole new perspective.
Rolling with it means struggle.
Rolling with it means a challenge.
Rolling with it means letting go of worry and fear.
Rolling with it means {trust}.
.................................................
I'm choosing to {roll with it}.
Knowing that there is a good chance that I might fail, but in the failure ... God will work {good} in and through me.
Knowing that there is a good chance that I may struggle & face a variety of challenges ... but believing with my whole heart ... that what happens next that distinguishes the truly exceptional.
and you know what else .. I think people that {roll with it} have a lot more fun in life too. Don't you?!
